~* Monday kisses *~

Give me a thousand kisses, then a hundred.
Then, another thousand, and a second hundred.
Then, yet another thousand, and a hundred.
Then, when we have counted up many thousands,
Let us shake the abacus, so that no one may know the number, and become jealous when they see
How many kisses we have shared.
-Catullus

Once upon a time, I was in love with a man who was my soulmate. When I was 18.

It was a long time ago, recessiontime. Jobs were hard to come by; he had occasional bartender gigs at night, I worked as a sales girl behind the counter at the Hakaniemi market. I had to be at work at 6 AM, he came home from his job at 4 AM. We barely saw each other awake. There was no money. We had no furniture, just a mattress on the floor of our 17 square meter flat.. When we ate soup, sitting on the floor, we ate from the same plate as we only had one.

It sounds unreal now, but very real it was.

Sometimes I had to walk to work as we didn’t have money for the tram ticket – had I been busted without a ticket our fragile economy would have collapsed. My tiny salary was rather systematically late and I had to constantly argue to get the correct sum. My employer deducted taxes from the salary he paid me, in cash of course, but never declared the taxes to the government. There were no receipts or salary slips from those jobs. We couldn’t afford to protest.

Regardless of all the struggle, in my mind, we were happy. Laughed and loved, a lot. Were sure not only of each other, but of life. That everything would work out, get better.

There’s particularly one thing about that era that I remember vividly. My love had only one pair of shoes and there was a large hole on the sole of the other one. Most inconvenient with the snow and slit of autumn Finland. Although we never tried to eat the shoe, there was something Chaplinesque about it. Romantic even, retrospectively.

We were saving money for a new pair of shoes. It was a priority above everything else as winter was approaching. And he came to the market one especially rainy and grey Tuesday morning – he’d oftentimes drop by before going to work, to give me a kiss.

This time, he’d bought me the most beautiful bouquet of flowers.

Why, I asked, remember the shoes! Because it’s Tuesday, he said.

This was one of the many lessons I learned from my love story. Sometimes they are necessary, no matter what.

Monday kisses. Tuesday flowers.

…who delivered me a dreamy cotton gauze piece of a shawl like this, by Moonalia Design:

I’ll be wearing my new soft light creamy dreamy shawl like in the photo on the right, due to some snowy windy circumstances… But I’ll be dreaming of wearing it like in the photo in the middle :). Soon. ish.

as I mentioned earlier, I had the opportunity to take a peek into the wardrobe of Sari Ihatsu, Managing Director of Ajatar. Wow. I got to choose the most delicious finds of hers, over the years… So here it its, a real treat for you, my dear readers.

This long beige dream is made of lamb from Tuscany and decorated, by hand, with coral beads. A slightly bohemian hippy feeling… Love it.

Another favorite of mine was this little fur, also of lamb from Tuscany, adorned with beautifully artistic hand-painted decorations.

Adjusting the lighting..I could only drool over this one. It’s Italian, with lasercut lace-like details. Too gorgeous.

Into some serious business. A long white mink, with crystal-encrusted buttons and snake skin details (where it looks like stripes – it’s snake!). It doesn’t get more luxurious than this.

Sari, being a rather free spirit and a cool personality, wears her long white mink when shopping for groceries or running  errands… She doesn’t like to be stuck in a box of how one is “supposed” to dress but wear her furs where and when she likes.

Oftentimes Sari wears her furs such as this sable one with a belt – you have to be quite petitte to pull this look off, but she is.

I loved the beautifully decorated silk inside this coat… Even if nobody else sees it, you know it’s there. And it makes a difference…

Below is Sari’s choice from this season’s new collection. The color is called Blue Irish, which in my opinion becomes it well..

Ajatar celebrated her 60 years in business all through October – here Sari is getting ready for another champagne reception.

And this jacket I simply must mention – the best seller of this year’s collection. I attended the first evening fashion show celebration of Ajatar, and it was this coat that was sold out straight away – ladies just carried them away whilst sipping their champagne.

It was also beautifully styled and featured in Gloria magazine:

Worry not ladies, if your heart swoons over this one… They’ve ordered more at Ajatar 🙂 .

At the end of hard day’s work Sari took us for a lovely lunch at Torni. Mmmmmm, great food, even greater company. It was lovely to get to know each other a little bit deeper. There were in fact so many things we have in common. And last but not the least, I got the best address of the South of France, for our next visit… A place where Sari and her husband spend every new year.

And I’m sorry, I’m sworn into secrecy. Can’t tell you what it is..

PS. The last photo shows what Sari always carries with her in her handbag. A little piece of the South of France, in the shape of a heart.

…but just watching my kids play reminded me. There’s magic everywhere ♥

…was spent yesterday at the recordings of the new Voice of Finland season.

There is the cutest photo in the world of my son in That Chair but as I don’t post recognizable photos of children on the net you’re stuck with me… Sorry!

My son and I always watched the show together so it was a really sweet opportunity to see and feel all the excitement firsthand, together. My son is a little bit shy by nature – and the situation rather overwhelming – so he didn’t quite dare to go and speak to his idols. Just being a few meters away from Lauri Tähkä, whose songs he always belts out to me, was a real adventure for him.

And interesting it was, really. A lot of banter between the judges for the best singers, behind the scenes jokes, proposed wrestling matches…

The coaches took so much time to talk to their fans in the audience, to boost the spirits of the viewers, sign autographs, pose for fan photos… I think they did their best to make the full audience feel welcome. What touched me is that the whole show, the making of it as well as what you see on tv, is made with a warm and kind spirit.

Whereas I deeply resent all those reality shows where people are ridiculed and put down and the more they collapse in front of their judges (and at worst, these are young kids), the better tv it makes. I’d never take my son to watch something like that in the making.

This show really is different. The praise is genuine, criticism given constructively and softly, the age of the contestant considered. The young ones not chosen were told not to feel down, their time will come…

There was one song that especially brought shivers down my spine… I suppose we’re not allowed to say much, but something by Queen will definitely rock you next spring.

And one more thing simply must be mentioned… Paula Koivuniemi’s shoes. Just wait till you see the shine of those crystals – they too will rock you ladies, this I can promise 🙂 . I do believe there’s nobody else in this country who could pull off those shoes but her.

And last but not least, I found an old friend there… Anitta and I used to work together at Save the Children for 5-6 years but after that period children, work, life… just happened, so much so that we didn’t manage to meet even once. Until yesterday, when I found her there, working for the campaign for the show at Nelonen..

What a warm feeling. Even her son, after so many years, remembered me!

So happy to see how many of your dreams have come true my friend ♥.

Just one idea of how to do it…

Cream chiffon dres, Kate Moss for TopShop, golden strappy shoes, a bit of tan and a smile from Nice.

Nothing else needed.

~* outfit of a day *~

Well, today will be spent outside with the kids in the rare combination of brisk fresh weather AND the sun, wandering around the national park of Nuuksio.

But here’s an outfit of a day, anyway, as these posts are constantly most requested…One of my favorite skirts is this one, made of smooth thick silk and adorned by finest French lace, by Jasmin Santanen Paris. So sophisticated, with a cut that hugs the body perfectly (sorry, had no time for ironing..).

The cape is from  Ajatar, deep burgundy heels are by Pura Lopez, although the photos don’t do justice to the color.

~* one perfect day *~

last summer we toured nearby vineyards and little châteaus for wine tastings with friends who were visiting our little haven in the South of France…

my sweet friend Hanna-Maria

In this particular château they had developed a rosé bottle that resembled a perfume bottle… Beautiful. Our friends were celebrating their fourth wedding anniversary just the following day so this is the bottle we chose for them.

One of the things I most love about France is how full of history every last corner of this country is.

This little castle and vineyard was German stronghold during the Second World War. They left the owners and their staff a couple of rooms and occupied the rest. One of the survivors, a madame Romer, worked for my French family for years after the war and told how she’d stolen food from the Germans’ dog for her children so they’d survive. Even the dog was allowed so much better food than the locals of the occupied France.

Incredibly, madame Romer also hid a Jewish man from her village in the stables of the castle throughout the war, right under the noses of the German troops. She was able to steal enough food for him and provide him a safe place, but he couldn’t set a foot outside his hiding place before the country was liberated.

He survived.

my son ♥!

Before and after the war, all the children from nearby villages would come to swim in the castle’s large water tank when temperatures soared up to 40 degrees in the summertime.

Still today, some of us were tempted…

My kids immediately caught the photogenic vibe of the place ♥.

There’s magic everywhere… If only you have the eyes to see it.

This vineyard was one of the first places of Provence to be liberated; it was here that the first paratroopers landed from airplanes.

I still get shivers just thinking about it all.
