I’m not quite sure whether I like it or not, but many people have nicknamed me Butterfly. Strangely, it’s mostly men, starting with my father when I was little.

I’ve been written Butterfly inspired poems that made me cry,  it’s been engraved into jewellery given to me. Most fitting, in my opinion, is Serge’s habit of using Butterfly as a verb in my regard.

“Have you done something useful today, or just butterflied around?”

Of course most often, I’ve just butterflied…

Most beautiful of all Butterfly themed tributes however, is this song by Heli Kajo. I’ve listened to it a hundred times tonight already… and just can’t stop.

I’d like to recommend a most thought provoking exposition to any and all of you who might visit Paris this summer. At Musée du quai Branly, titled “Les Maîtres du désordre” – Masters of disorder, or chaos, – it was a must-see for me.

Out of all the ancient or modern traditions – from Tibet, Mali,India, the Ivory Coast, Brazil, Colombia, Papua New Guinea, Tahiti, Siberia… – invented by man to control the uncontrollable,  it was surprisingly a piece from the US that truly got under my skin.

On the screen behind me Anna Halprin, one of the great pioneers of modern dance, who in 1975 learned that she had fatal cancer.

Instead of surrendering to the inevitable, Anna decided to attack her beast within. She invited 10 of her closest friends to witness as she painted  an image of her cancer on a huge canvas, and exorcised it with dance, cries, prayer, kneeling, fighting… with inimitable despair and rage.

Her wailing, screaming, crying, wordless cursing filled the full exhibition hall, echoing everywhere.

So bare. Raw. Powerful.

Absolutely haunting.

In her next medical check-up, all signs of her cancer were gone.

This documentary tale  hit a core in me as I’ve – rather helplessly – witnessed both my parents struggling against cancer.

Their approach towards their personal demons was rather… Different. Very Finnish, very stoic. Neither of them ever discussed their fears or pains – maybe they would have considered it complaining.

All their screams were only heard within, all their battles took place inside their heads.

Maybe they would have benefited from shouting, cursing and swearing it out instead of holding all that inside.

So alone. In such discreet silence.

Note to self. Call mom. Every Day.

Ps. Anna (born 1920) still occasionally lectures at universities.

She was the first person to introduce nude dancers.

The first person to introduce black and white dancers together.

First person to present a group of HIV positive dancers.

What a Lady.

…strange yet true association I have with this song I stumbled upon:

When I was 6, and we lived in Zambia, we toured quite a bit of Eastern Africa. By car, with no air conditioning.

I sure got to understand, at grassroot level, what a very large continent Africa is.

Bumpy dirt track roads, neverending distances, relentless heat and 14-hour daily trips with no stops meant that some amusement had to be created for the 3- and 6-year old girls in the car. Luckily (as we didn’t have a cassette player in the car) my dad was a great singer. Karhunpoika sairastaa, Mikki Hiiri merihädässä, Rosvo-Roope, Pieni tytön tylleröinen, Ihme ja Kumma… With his spirited renditions of his own childhood classics he somehow managed to keep us entertained for hours on end.

I still know the full production of Georg Malmstén by heart.

This chorus, that my dad sang to me sooooo often as a lullaby, has followed me all my life. Strangely, especially at times of sorrow, I return to it and find some comfort. Sorry dear foreign readers, I wouldn’t dream of translating these lyrics as I could never capture the childhood innocence implied with mere words.

“Maailmassa monta
On ihmeellistä asiaa,
Se hämmästyttää, kummastuttaa
Pientä kulkijaa”

The song embedded, Hopeinen kuu / Silver Moon by Olavi Virta was my father’s own all-time favorite. We used to have horrible taste with my sister, as we’d loudly protest in favor of children’s rallies whenever he belted out this tango…

Now that I heard it again, after decades, it brought an incredible storm of nostalgia to my heart.

Ei tulla koskaan, voi tällaista iltaa…

Oih.

Today I’m having a little adventure, just me by myself.

I’m in a new town, in a lovely hotel, about to have a bubble bath with a glass of champagne…

Have spent my day meeting the most interesting people, taken a million photos…

Dined in a beautiful restaurant, a gorgeous 3-course meal in peace and quiet, enjoying the sound of my own thoughts…

And after my bath, there’s still a concert in the cards for tonight, at midnight.

Hmmmm… Today feels like writing  little but special chapter to the book of life.

My life.

As summer and little dress season is approaching, I’ve gathered some ideas on how to add some ooompf to your favorite lacy pieces.

Things such as a cool turquoise pendant. Softest leather bag. Signature vintage ring. Those skinny jeans.

Like so (from the photo archives of Unjung Jun):

Hmmm… what a combo of leather and torn fishnet -look stockings:

You can accessorize your lacy dress with a handsome beau, and a coy smile…

Or maybe you’d prefer a cool hat and a good book instead:

And of course denim works, always.

Or quite simply, with just a little bit of skin:

MmmmmmMmm…

I think it’s time to dig out my little summer dresses from their winter hideaways.

A Monday when one wakes up to snow and slit – body in April, mind in spring – deserves something especially sweet.

And something so sweet indeed, downright humbling, has been captured in these pictures… When I stumbled upon them on fb I got lost in their peaceful and pristine world for a long time. And at lest my day felt instantly a little bit better.

So, with these pictures I wish you LOVE to your Monday.

…watching the lovely romantic movie Before Sunset. Again.

I know I’ve written about it before… What can I say. This movie just gets under my skin… The romance of it is real, instead of the usual sugarcoating.

So real, that all by my myself, I’m secretly believing in Jesse and Celine…

So if you ever doubt the existence of poetic justice in this universe, try Before Sunset. (First, you absolutely must see Before Sunrise – and be 10 years younger when seeing it – then the “sequel” Sunset, 10 years later).

Works for me, every time…♥.

Celine: Baby, you are gonna miss that plane.

Jesse: I know

Post Scriptum: I’ve loved Julie Delpy since Kieslowski’s White. Ethan Hawke since the Dead Poet’s Society. And here these two Moonbeams have actually written the script, together with friend & director Richard Linklater. Making a little small budget piece of art with grit, biting reality, soulmates. Conveying the love of a lifetime without so much as a kiss.(Ok I’ve got nothing against kissing… But here it works).

Ah.
