My first and deepest memory of Finland’s independence is from Zambia.

Every year, on December 6th, we’d gather around the radio, trying to hear any word, any sentence, from President Kekkonen’s independence day speech amongst the relentless static. And even though I was so little I hardly understood the meaning of independence, the President’s speech felt terribly important.

Although we had no phone lines, no newspapers, virtually no contact to Finland, we had that static and (with very good imagination) a word here and there.

We had two candles in the window.

It was enough to feel like home.

A man I don’t even know gave me a touch of that real Christmas spirit today – this one deserves to be shared.

You all know that show “Vain elämää” from Nelonen. Well, I’ve told you my 7-year-old son loves music… We’ve watched every episode together, loving it. And he really wants to see the concert also… But of course it was sold out before I even realised there would be a concert.

Now the tickets available on huuto.net are around 350-400 euros, for us two. As I don’t have work at the moment, it’s a serious investment. But he loves music so much…

So, I’ve been saving up.

I’ve tried betting for some tickets but the prices always rose beyond my means. Until yesterday when reasonably priced, great seats became available. I placed my bet. And sent a message to the seller, asking him if he had a final price for the tickets as I’d love to offer this to my son for Christmas.

This morning, I got mail. The man had taken the tickets off the market. He offered them to me at cost price – much lower that the bet I’d already made.

He said he didn’t want to sell the tickets to a broker, but rather give a little boy this experience.

Wow.

I was so taken aback by the kindness of this stranger, that don’t think I even thanked him.

Did I mention that he also sent us the ticket pdfs straight away, before I’d even paid?

Thank you, Dear Stranger.

Because of you, our December began with thankful happiness. That genuine Christmas spirit.

~* First snow *~

the day of the first snow in Helsinki was the day when I rediscovered my innate tree hugger… in the national park of Nuuksio.

*

This was something amazing. The thin rittle of ice made a superb sound, like a bird singing, when you’d throw sticks on it horizontally…

They’d slide across the lake and SING.

IMG_0887You know that moment… when the chill in the air tells you it’s about to snow? Autumn becomes winter.

This was it.

IMG_0889There’s something quintessentially Finnish, Novemberish feel to that moment… But still on that day, the clouds broke their relentless greyness for us.

we’ll be going to a concert with my son…

dreaming away at a friend’s house… with the most incredible view at the Uspeski cathedral.

We share a love for music, my 7-year-old and I.

The only applicance we have, however, for listening to music, is my laptop. The – kröhm – hi-fi has died of old age long, long ago.

So just the other day, I prepared a bath for my sons who were listening to music. As I tried to usher them in my 7-year-old professed earnestly:

‘”I can’t take a bath! I can’t live without music for so long!”.

♥♥♥.

I carried the laptop next to the bath tub so there needn’t be any interruptions and sweetheart could go on living.

That’s what I call everyday poesie ♥.
